    Roth v. Hagar v. Cherone

Recently, I came across the torrent for “Balance” – a Van halen album from the mid-90’s Hagar region. This album was one of my favorites, and it brought an entire plethora of memories from my teenage years when i really liked and listened to alot of Van Halen.

This got me thinking… Which lead singer of Van Halen is the best? I almost titled this thread as “Roth v. Hagar”, because in all seriousness, who can even compare Gary Cherone to either of them? He was a short lived wonder and an overall bad thing to happen to the entire music industry.

So that leaves David Lee Roth and Samuel James Hagar. For me, this decision comes quickly and easily. Sammy Hagar was a much better frontman for VanHalen than Dave R. was. For me, Hagar is a better singer, songwriter, frontman, and entire persona. Obviously, Roth was the first, so he has his group of loyalist who think anybody else is garbage… But the truth is that the band is completely different with these two singers. With Roth, the songs always seemed to be sexual in nature… Either that or drugs/drinking/overall partying.

With Hagar, Van Halen’s songs take on a depth. They don’t have meaningless lyrics about wanting to have relations with your teacher. They are real, heartfelt… the songs have an emotional side that Roth’s just don’t. Obviously there are exceptions on both sides to this argument (Jump, Poundcake..etc.) but the general consensus i believe to be accurate.
    Other things to consider…

    • Roth’s Jumping splits
    • Roth’s “spandex”
    • Hagar’s Perm
    • Tornadoes (only enfuego and vanbergs will get that reference)
    • Eddie VanHalen

Regardless of the frontman, Eddie VanHalen is probably the best guitarist of all time… It’s hard to even consider somebody who is more of an innovator. I don’t usually like instrumental music very much… but some of the instrumental songs by Eddie VH are amazing. (Eruption and Baluchitherium for example.) Digress, the debate is not Eddie VanHalen… Who was a better frontman for VanHalen… Roth or Hagar??

      David Draiman

David D. is a better singer than both, i agree… but as he was never the lead man for VH, then that is not a valid point.

      What is Van Halen?

    • vanlandw 3:50 pm on October 27, 2006 Permalink

who are you vanbergs vanberge and jjafuller

I feel David Lee is more “fun” but Hagar had a better voice. He was kinda wussy at times but ultimately it’s a tough call. David Lee is more party rock where Hagar is more soulful.

Cherone is the worst lead singer ever ttyl

i grew up with the hagar variant of van halen. so, therefore, i would have to agree with van on this one. but david d. is the best lead singer ever. he should be the lead singer of all bands, inculding van halen.

Truth of the matter is this… The best lead singer of VanHalen was Eddie’s guitar… The vocals in every song created by that group are FAR outweighed by the skillful ministrations of pick and fingering upon “the Soul of Rock” by the skillful master, Eddie… It takes but one riff on that guitar to send chills down the spine of true rock fans…. and that IS what rock is all about.

      Amen, mickeyvb

jja… that comment wasnt even worth leaving. what a waste of time, effort, and a mysql table row.

Mickeyvb, you are right i doth believe… Even though i would call hagar the better singer, songs like Panama and Runnin’ with the devil are truly epic… And its really EVH’s guitar that does that, not Roth’s vocals/lyrics… ๐Ÿ˜›

    • Kramer 6:55 pm on October 30, 2006 Permalink

      MickeyVB is dead on.

Although, it was sad that EVH couldn’t make up for the sucktitude of Gary Cherone.

And in my book, Stevie Ray Vaughan > Eddie Van Halen, but that’s another debate for another day.

So, I’m married. I went to mexico for a week. I snorkeled. I ate like a king. I got a tan. I got a disturbed ticket.

I hate flying. I love vanbergs. I love the sopranos. I love the wire. I hate prison break. I hate nip tuck. I love/hate russellteee. I hate iguanas. I hate the detroit lions. I hate rain. I’m alive.

What a dizzying couple of weeks.

Our wedding and reception was legitimately the most fun i have had in a very long time. I’ve never ever danced like that, and i’m sure i never will again. I dont know who started it or what happened or how it began, but i had so much fun. I was very glad to have so many family and friends be able to make it. I felt truly lucky, and my thanks to everyone for being a part of that.

This leads me to my call of arms. I am begging that anybody who sustained any form of photography at this reception or party to please find a way to get me copies of those pictures. Cdrom, zip file, whatever. I’d really like to have copies of everyone’s pictures from that night. Mainly, im thinking:

    • Flo
    • Gato/Vanlandw
    • Mickeyvb/Vanbergs
    • Rusty?

I know alot of you have posted the pics on line, but i can’t really download each one individually (if there is a bulk download option i am missing, please inform me… i’ll do that!) Vanlandw? maybe you can host a zip of the gato’s? Flo maybe you can host a zip of yours? ๐Ÿ˜› Thanks in advance everyone seriously.

Now the honeymoon. I hadn’t been on an airplane since i was probably 14/15. At that point in my life, i loved it. I couldn’t stop staring out the window. This time flying was a different experience. Everything went smoothly… no lost bags, no delays. But i hated flying. I hated traveling in general. I hated customs. Luggage. Metal detectors. Waiting in terminals. The whole process drank bleach. It was fun being in mexico, but getting there and coming back made me not want to travel anywhere again for a long time.

All in all, i’m happy. Very happy. No kids anytime soon though…

    • I added internet to my phone. ($5.99… seriously)
    • I am watching the sopranos season 5.
    • I finished the Wire season 2.
    • I am proposing a “go out” night this weekend. Anybody interested in uccello’s or BW3s?

Your wedding was awesome, Vanberge. It was great to see all of you, and I am extremely glad I made it.

I agree with you about flying. Normally I like to fly. If you read my blog, you can read my experience with United Airlines and why they are on the dead to me list.

vanlandw, we can do uccello’s tomorrow (friday) eh?

      we should!

Kramer, i’m glad you made it too… damn good to see you man. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • FLO 12:45 am on October 20, 2006 Permalink

well, considering i might or might not work tomorrow, i say friday is the sure bet. all depends if the doctor sticks a very large needle into my hip and draws bone marrow from me like an ant eater drawing ants from an ant hill. i’ve heard the procedure is painfull. if it is, no work and then ucello’s on vicodin. no procedure, then work. what fun. out at 11pm.
